BARGOED RFC 2ND XV v YNYSYBWL RFC 21st April 2009
KEITH JONES CUP FINAL
Bargoed, the current cup holders, travelled to Rhydyfelin to meet Ynysybwl in the Keith Jones Cup Final to hopefully retain the cup for a second year.
The Bwl kicked off and Bargoed retained the early possession to edge towards their opponents try line. The early pressure told and Bargoed had the dream start when scrum half Rhys Vaughan broke from a scrummage 10m from the line and cut through the defence to put the first points on the scoreboard after only four minutes. Outside half Steffan Jones stepped up the score the first of his ten points on the night.
Jones had the opportunity to add to his tally some five minutes later when he attempted a long range penalty kick 8m inside his own half. Sadly it fell just short. With fifteen minutes on the clock, Ynysybwl had their first penalty of the evening which they drilled into touch, however, the Bargoed defence held firm. They were awarded a second penalty 3 minutes later and this time they opted for the posts. The kick went across the face of the posts and was gathered by full back Ian Jenkins who broke out of defence.
Half way through the first half Bargoed scored their second after some excellent work by strong flanker Ryan Saddler who fed prop forward Ian Jenkins who threw a long pass to his namesake full back Ian Jenkins who scored in the corner. Jones’ touchline conversion attempt fell just short. From the restart, the Bwl had a ten minute period of pressure but resolute defence prevented them scoring. However, despite soaking up the pressure it was Bargoed who scored another try in injury time after good work by the forwards it was Steffan Jones who made a little break he then passed around the back the centre Dai Fortune who strolled over for Bargoed’s third try. Jones added the extra two points to bring the half time score to 19-0.
Ynysybwl had a dream start to the second half when they were awarded a penalty after two minutes. They went for touch and from the lineout they secured possession and fed the ball to their backline and their centre scored under the sticks which was duly converted to bring the score to 19-7. However, Jones added three points to his sides total from a penalty after five minutes. He added a further three points some ten minutes later to bring the score to 25-7. He was given a further opportunity three minutes later but it fell just short.
With the game won, coaches Broad & Vaughan rang the changes and made full use of their young bench to give them the experience of playing in a cup final. There was no further score and the referee drew an end to proceedings with Bargoed retaining the cup for a second term.
